Every organization today is built human-centric — a person is the checkpoint in every process flow. That is about to change. The shift is to human-agentic: humans govern, agents execute, and the platform's depth becomes the foundation rather than the constraint. It is not a destination you arrive at and stop — it is a form you operate in, and keep re-forming, as the agents get more capable.
For its entire history, business has been human-centric. A person sits in the middle of every process, every decision, every transaction — not because a person always should, but because, until now, only a person could. The systems were built around that fact. The org charts were built around that fact. And it worked, because there was no alternative.
The alternative has arrived. Agents can now execute the routine work that a person used to have to carry by hand. That does not make the organization human-less. It makes it human-agentic: a structure where humans govern and agents execute, instead of humans executing every step themselves.
Every decision routes through a person. The speed of the organization is the speed of its slowest human. The person who knows the business is both the bottleneck and the single point of failure — and every node in the flow is another place the work can stall.
Humans own strategy, judgment, ethics, escalation.
Agents handle routine work, automation, data-driven decisions — under governance, with every action logged.
RPG + Db2 · decades of business logic · the moat. The protected heart of everything above it.
The easy misread of this shift is that it is about doing the same work with fewer people. It is not. The governing principle is revenue per employee, not headcount reduction — the team multiplies its output, it does not shrink. The person who spent their day executing routine work is freed to do the thing only a person can: govern, judge, decide, and direct the system that now carries the routine.
That is also why the shift cannot be bolted on. Pointing agents at a human-centric process without redesigning the process just automates the inefficiency at higher speed. The structure itself has to change — humans moved from executing the work to governing it, the process rebuilt so agents can execute under that governance. That redesign is the work.
The diagram above has a second version, and it draws the same. In one, judgment stays with the humans who govern — freed from executing the routine, positioned where it is worth the most. In the other, the judgment itself migrates to the agent — because the agent can now hold what used to take a room full of people, and no one decided to stop it. The boxes are identical. Humans on top, agents underneath, the core at the center. What differs is who is actually deciding, and that does not show up in the picture.
On most platforms that drift is slow. On IBM i it is fast — and for the same reason the platform is an advantage. The business logic is already concentrated in one place, proven and journaled, held by a handful of people who know how it runs. An agent that can hold what they hold is a short step from holding instead of them. The very centralization that makes the sovereign core a moat is what makes the judgment around it easy to absorb.
So the line has two sides, and they are not the same work. The sovereign core protects the logic — that is architecture, and the access and governance layers keep it intact. It does not, by itself, protect the judgment. The logic you keep by building correctly. The judgment you keep on purpose — by deciding, at each point where an agent could carry a decision, whether a human still should — or you lose it by default, to a system that was glad to hold it.
Human-agentic is not a different business. It is the same business — the same encoded logic, the same mission-critical core — run at a different speed, with people positioned where their judgment is worth the most. What changes is the Knowledge Distance between that judgment and the agents acting on it — closed, not widened, by the new form. The platform that was built to run the business isn't what gets modernized past in this shift. It becomes the foundation the whole agentic structure stands on.
